Native Realty Honored at South Florida Business Journal’s Structure Awards

Native Realty and Gateway Shopping District were recently honored at the 2023 South Florida Business Journal’s Structure Awards for Best Retail Project.

Native Realty oversaw the reuse/rehabilitation of Gateway Shopping Center. What began in January 2021 as an overlooked and neglected asset emerged in late 2022 as a reimagined real estate asset. The property, on East Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale’s Victoria Park neighborhood, had languished for several decades despite its position in the middle of a high-traffic corridor and the growth of the neighborhood around it.

At a cost of $12.5 million, the redevelopment maintained the appeal of the property by tying into its history as the site of Clyde Beatty’s Jungle Zoo. Native executives, led by CEO Jamie Sturgis, identified retailers that would attract similar demographics and give Gateway a sense of place by incorporating public art in a large-scale forum.
